With the show coming to an end, and fans eager to find out what will happen in the fifth season now seems like a good time to learn about how Mandy Moore actually got the part. The truth is, it wasn’t nearly as easy as some of us would imagine. After all, Mandy is a pretty big star. Who wouldn’t want her on their show?
Well, here’s went actually went down.
Mandy Revealed The Truth of Her Casting On The Howard Stern Show
The Howard Stern Show is a great place for celebrities to reveal personal details about their life. Partly, this has to do with the fact that the 40-year-plus show is on the radio. Additionally, Howard has been with SiriusXM satellite radio since 2006, meaning conversations aren’t bound by commercial breaks or censors. But most important, Howard Stern has become one of the greatest celebrity interviewers of all time. He easily makes his guests feel comfortable. And this is precisely what happened when he had Mandy Moore on his show in June 2018.
“This Is Us… They’re casting for a new show, you have no idea whether or not this show is going to be a hit,” Howard began.
“No idea,” Mandy replied.
“How did you hear about the audition for—because you had to audition for this.”
“Oh, yeah.”
“Were you insulted that you had to audition because you had done quite a bit of work?” Howard asked.
“No way. No way was I insulted. I auditioned–we all still audition. Unless you’re Meryl Streep,” Mandy said. “That’s part of being an actor.”

Even with This Is Us being a huge success, Mandy admitted to still having to audition for projects. And even though she had worked with the writer of This Is Us, Dan Fogelman, on Tangled, Mandy had to audition for his next project.
“So, he has a script. He’s worked with you on this animated thing. Does he say to you ‘Hey, I got this new show, I want you to come in and audition?'”
Mandy claimed that is not at all how she landed the role in the NBC drama. She had just moved agencies and had decided to no longer look at network television pilot season scripts. Instead, she wanted to spend time with Amazon, Hulu, HBO, and Netflix, who cast their shows all year round. However, Dan Fogelman’s network pilot script did cross her desk… albeit in October, quite early for the January – April pilot season.
Because Mandy didn’t want to get her hopes up for an inevitably doomed network series, she reluctantly read Dan Fogleman’s script… And she loved it!
“The script knocked me out!”
What Mandy didn’t know was that, if she got the part, she would have to play multiple versions of herself to suit the show’s timeline jumping.
Regardless, Mandy really wanted the job. She was blown away by the interconnection of the stories and characters in the pilot. She didn’t know where the show was going to go but was excited about the “multitude of possibilities”.
The Audition Process Was REALLY Long
Mandy was one of the first people who read for the role of Rebecca Pearson. She claimed that the responses she got were very positive, but the casting team was moving on to test more actors in New York.
6 weeks later, Mandy received a call saying that it was down to her and two other people. Mandy was then brought in to read a monologue from the second episode that would show the casting team and the director that she could do a completely different scene than any in the first episode.
It worked. She won them over.
But there was still another hurdle to clear…
Mandy had to nail a chemistry read with the man who would play her husband; an actor she had barely even heard of… Milo Ventimiglia.
During her interview with Howard Stern, Mandy claimed that all of her worries about this chemistry read were put to rest as soon as she sat down with Milo.
“It was instant. It was easy. It was effortless. It was like right there,” she said.
Essa química é o que solidificou sua posição e, finalmente, ganhou um papel que seus fãs vão se lembrar por toda a vida.
