Some stars decided to become emancipated to pursue a career in Hollywood. Others were totally supported by their parents as they began their careers. Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of the latter group; she began acting at a young age.
So young, in fact, that she likely didn’t realize that the gig she’d accepted would get her “banned” from McDonald’s.
As IMDb reminded fans, in 1981, Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in a Burger King commercial. At least, that’s what IMDb says; some sources say the year was either 1982 or 1983.
This wasn’t just any ad, though: it named McDonald’s as a direct competitor of BK. It also dissed the burger joint.
At the time, little SMG was only about four (some sources say she was five), and in the ad spot, she explains why Burger King is superior to McDonald’s.
The thing was, McDonald’s execs didn’t like the callout, and the following year, they took Buger King to court over the advertisement. That’s a far cry from today’s snark on Twitter (and Wendy’s is always bringing their A-game!), but that’s beside the point.
Sarah Michelle, who was five at the time, even had to testify in court over her lines in the video. The whole story was bigger than the tiny tot, though: none of the big burger names had really called each other out before, noted Brian Cronin at HuffPost, and McDonald’s wasn’t happy about being name-dropped.
As for SMG’s thoughts on the whole thing, HuffPost noted that though many media outlets say she was “banned” from McDonald’s as a child, that wasn’t exactly true.
Instead, Sarah Michelle elaborated, she wasn’t able to show her face at the fast-food joint because someone could’ve recognized her. Instead of attending friends’ birthdays at Mickey D’s and enjoying apple pies, she’s been quoted as saying, she had to stay home. Or, she elaborated, she’d have to cover up her face.
Truth in advertising, right? A young Sarah Michelle couldn’t very well be photographed noshing on McDonald’s french fries when she was endorsing BK on prime time TV!
That doesn’t mean SMG can’t enjoy a Big Mac these days, but it must have been tough being left out as a kid. Not that tough, though, because Gellar continued to star in BK commercials after the lawsuit.
